New OnBoard eBook Supports SMEs in Building Better Onboarding Practices

The OnBoard project has released a new practical eBook titled “Smart Onboarding for SMEs: From Research to Practice”, developed to help small and medium-sized enterprises improve employee integration, retention, and employer branding.

The publication translates international research findings from the OnBoard Erasmus+ project into practical guidance and easy-to-apply recommendations for SMEs. Based on interviews, surveys, and case studies from multiple European countries, the eBook explores the most common onboarding challenges faced by SMEs and highlights effective strategies for creating stronger and more supportive onboarding experiences.

The eBook focuses on key topics such as:

  • why onboarding is strategic for SMEs;
  • the role of mentoring and employee support;
  • onboarding challenges and barriers in small organisations;
  • employee expectations and workplace integration;
  • emotional aspects of onboarding and belonging;
  • practical frameworks and onboarding tools for SMEs.

Among the main findings highlighted in the publication are that onboarding in SMEs is often informal and unstructured, mentoring plays a central role in successful employee integration, and clear expectations and consistent support significantly improve retention and engagement.

The guide is designed for SME owners, managers, HR professionals, trainers, consultants, VET providers, and policy stakeholders seeking practical and evidence-based approaches to onboarding. It combines research insights with actionable recommendations that organisations can adapt according to their size, sector, and resources.

The publication was developed within the framework of the OnBoard Erasmus+ Project, which supports European SMEs in improving onboarding procedures to reduce turnover and strengthen organisational resilience.
