International Webinar Highlights the Importance of Better Onboarding in SMEs

On 13 May 2026, the OnBoard Project held the international webinar “Improving Onboarding Practices in SMEs: Better Onboarding. Stronger Teams.” The event brought together SMEs, HR professionals, trainers, VET providers, researchers and stakeholders from across Europe to discuss how better onboarding can support stronger teams and more resilient organisations.

The webinar focused on one key question: how can SMEs create a smoother, more supportive and more effective start for new employees? Speakers and participants explored practical ways to improve employee integration, strengthen engagement, reduce early turnover and build a more positive workplace culture.

The session combined research findings, expert input and real-life perspectives. Presentations covered topics such as structured onboarding, mentoring, employee support, digital learning, vocational education, labour market inclusion and ecosystem-based approaches to talent retention.

A strong message from the discussion was that onboarding is much more than an administrative step. It is a strategic process that helps new employees understand their role, connect with colleagues and feel confident in their new workplace.

Key topics discussed during the webinar included:

  • structured onboarding practices for SMEs;
  • employee integration and workplace culture;
  • mentoring and support for new employees;
  • digital learning and training approaches;
  • practical strategies for improving engagement and retention.

The OnBoard Project would like to thank all speakers, participants and partners for their valuable contribution to the webinar and for the exchange of ideas and experience.
